Do you ever wonder “why,” you said yes to some project?  Of course, I could just drop this whole thing, but there is a part of me that simply doesn’t allow it. “Start it….finish it.”

OK…Now I’m up to Day 12 on my writing challenge for NHBPM…National Health Blog Post Month. I feel like I’ve been writing for the entire month. I’m still trying to uncover my discontent with the project. It reminds me of certain courses I was obligated to take in school & the resistance that accompanied them. I’m well aware that it makes things harder when the attitude is shifted towards “negative.” In all honesty to NHBPM, it’s not just this project. I also have this same attitude towards other things. Perhaps I’ll make a list of them one day. I know I’m not alone in this quagmire.

OK…I’m settling down now.

Today’s Assignment – Call BS on something.  I find this subject ridiculous…

More than that, I’m finding it difficult to wrap my mind around this. I’ve been writing a good part of today & so my mind is still in those areas of focus. I’m doing NaNoWriMo, which means I’m re-writing my novel…The Snow Crocus. I’m deeply involved with my main character…Lily. I’ve re-written her character a few times now & I’m moving much closer to my own inner self.  I didn’t intend on this happening & even tried to avoid it, but that part of me & my experiences keep coming up on the page. Perhaps this is something that is just ridiculous.

I SHOULD LET HER SPEAK & LET HER BE HERSELF. Under the circumstances, it is just ridiculous to keep pushing her out & denying her the right to “spill the beans.” I’m not sure why I felt so strongly about not letting her “be.” Part of me didn’t want to go back & re-hash these parts of my life. Another part of me didn’t want to share this with my husband who is sure to read the book before I publish it. I don’t want him to read too much into Lily’s thinking & choices.

Lily is about to take her own life. Like me, she has lost her son. Like me, her life has been very difficult. She is grieving, but has come to the realization that her life is “flat.” Her relationships are flat. She has no purpose or desire to aspire to anything. As Lily explains it, “It’s time to write the last paragraph, place the period at the end of the sentence & end the story. This is what she writes in her journal on “her last day.”  Obviously, this is the juncture where Lily & I part ways.  I’m nothing like her, but I do “get her.” I know those feelings. I’ve lived them before in other circumstances.

While I never thought about ending my own life, I can understand wanting to do that. I have deep compassion & understanding for people who find themselves in deep, dark places. I’ve been down in those trenches, but there was always something that I was able to grab to pull myself up.  I know it is only a few short steps from that place to the final period that closes the book.

I think it is important for me to allow Lily to express these dark emotions. Not to do so is “ridiculous.” For me to have any fear or reservation around this is ridiculous. This is part of my creative process. So…to follow my assignment for today….IT IS BS NOT TO FOLLOW MY CREATIVE PROCESS & TO ATTEMPT TO DENY IT ACCESS TO THE STORY.

Lily is not unlike many women I know. As I mentioned, I do know parts of her intimately. She is a woman who has always worked to everyone’s pleasure. What’s interesting about Lily is that she doesn’t know that she hasn’t been happy because she hasn’t experienced TRUE JOY in her life. She simply doesn’t think deeply about things like that. She is too pre-occupied in daily tasks. And then, she suffers a major loss that literally “cracks her shell.” The true Lily comes seeping out of the cracks & for the first time she no longer cares about pleasing anyone….as her anger subsides, she finds herself in no-mans land, living among the dead…where her son now resides. As her husband Todd screams at her….”You might as well be dead Lily.” Little does Todd know that Lily has already considered this.”

Now that I have everyone depressed, do know that Lily is about to go on an incredible adventure through her mirror…guided by an angel she met early on in her life. The story is filled with angels who wander amongst us, watching & waiting for the right moment to take charge & bring new rainbows into lives without color.

So…I’m DONE WITH RIDICULOUS. I can hear my inner voice saying “angels in mirrors”? Oh, give me a break. Now if that isn’t RIDICULOUS, what is?

“Well, excuse me Inner Mind.”

Stop locking your “believability door”…and choose to BELIEVE. You may get a big surprise!

Inner Detective Work – Disorderly Eating

Parents teach their kids lifestyle behavior patterns. Perhaps you, as a parent-leader, have failed many times at making lifestyle changes. There may be a part of you that doesn’t even want to read my books, articles or participate in mp3 sessions or workshops. It may be difficult for you to concentrate, or maybe you are overwhelmed with what you have to do. It may have been years since you felt well. I hear this every day and so you are not alone. This is all too familiar in the world of chronic disease and symptom management. So…. I wonder if you would be willing to put all of that aside & take a leap of faith with me?….

LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING…

We all start off pretty much the same, at least on the outside, but if one could visit the genetics of you as a baby , the underpinnings of many chronic diseases would most likely be found at cellular levels. These are parts of your internal wallpaper or tendencies towards particular diseases, as well as addictions. Your future health outcomes, as well as your cognitive or mind development, depend on how your parents cared for you, as well as how you cared & continue to care for yourself in later years.

Of course, habits are born early. As a young child your learned from your experiences & what your senses tell you from the time you were an infant. Your parents & siblings were your early health & wellness teachers. If they weren’t practicing good lifestyle behaviors, you learned what not to do…… & like all babies, learned it very well!

While statistics are often seen as boring, they do help us to self-motivate. Chronic diseases account for 7 of every 10 U.S. deaths & for more than 60% of medical care expenditures. In addition, the prolonged illness & disability associated with many chronic diseases decrease quality of life for millions of Americans.

STAYING AWAKE

It’s a good idea to stay aware as you walk through life. Notice people & their level of health. See if you can spot those with chronic disease. A good mind exercise is to image your head on the body of someone with a chronic problem. Focus on the lifestyle behaviors that accompany the individual. If you are shopping, look in their carts. If you are in the mall, observe their ability to move, as well as the level of fatigue. The better your focus on the problems displayed by other individuals, the more you will uncover that can be beneficial to you in your own self-growth. This says to the subconscious mind, “this could be me.” These humbling moments of self-awareness can be extremely powerful in developing inner programs for change.

THE CRITICAL ROLE OF HEALTHY EATING

Perhaps you picked up my book or registered for this workshop because you know that you need to change your eating habits. This was a good first step. Perhaps you already know that good nutrition lowers the risk for many chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, some types of cancer, diabetes & osteoporosis. For example, for at least 10 million Americans at risk for type II diabetes, proper nutrition & physical activity can sharply lower their chances of getting the disease.

Good nutrition that is designed to meet the specific needs of your body and exercise level also stops food cravings, bingeing, as well as cravings for other addictive substances.

Perhaps another reason you picked up my book is because you have noticed a resistance to change in some areas of your lifestyle behaviors. You are certainly not alone. Although Americans are slowly adopting healthier diets, a large gap remains between recommended dietary patterns and what Americans actually eat.

It is very interesting to observe people & their relationship to eating. Most people tend not to pay any or little attention to what they eat or drink. There is often a complete lack of discipline, as if food and beverage had nothing whatsoever to do with the internal functioning of the mind and body.

Truth be known, there is a huge connection between nutritional intake, chronic disease development, management & symptoms. Many individuals live in continuous food stress, causing their body and mind to function at very low levels. The chronic disease is often blamed, while the true culprit is the food stress.

OH…….THE POOR BODY PARTS

I wish you could be a fly on the wall of my office & listen as I interview patients about their eating habits. It is rare to find a single soul who is not experiencing what I call food stress, or disorderly eating. One cannot help but feel sorry for the poor body parts sitting before me. These body systems & cell groups are locked up, unable to get what they need to survive.

Imagine someone carrying a hungry baby in their arms & refusing to feed it. When individuals refuse to feed their body correctly, it is very much the same. The person with the baby could be arrested for child abuse. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t a law against self-abusing one’s body. Perhaps if there was such a law, people would begin to pay attention to what they are doing to themselves.

When the mind & body are under food stress, additional stress chemicals are produced as the body attempts to find balance. It is well known that chronic disease states are stress related. The medical literature suggests that 60-90% of disease states are related to stress in some way. This is actually good news. Translated correctly, this means that 60-90% is within one’s power to change.

There is much to be learned from observing chronic disease & the lifestyle behaviors of those with the problems. There is no lack of people to observe. Walk through the supermarket, the mall, the movie theater, the baseball park or just about anywhere else. Go into the school cafeteria or walk the halls, observing the junk machines. Count the fast food restaurants as you drive through your town. Try to locate a healthy place to eat. See how many non-food places sell junk food at their registers.

Observe how many people are eating outside of regular meal times. How many of these people are doing something else while they are eating. This is called mindless, or blind eating. Walk through your office or workplace and see how much junk you can locate. Watch for ongoing cans of soda or the bottomless coffee mug. Also look for those items that people try to pass off as healthy “alternatives”. Then ask yourself, why do we need to eat all day long?

Observation or assessment is key to designing change, because if one can’t see what needs to be changed, how can it be possible to do so? Sometimes these statements appear ridiculous, but once you begin paying attention to the problems that surround us, you might be stunned by what you uncover about yourself.

The reason for this is that most people live their lives on automatic pilot, not paying much attention to what they do “moment to moment.” They don’t see the big picture, nor the minute changes occurring in the mind & body triggered by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.

Little attention is paid to the reasons why heart disease, diabetes, circulatory disease, asthma, or the many others develop in some people, but not in others. Why do these diseases speed up during particular times of life and not in others? Little attention is paid to why the bowel is irritable, or why the body keeps breaking down in so many areas. Little attention is paid to why anxiety and/or panic disorder seem to be problematic in some, or why the anxiety comes in the afternoon & not the morning. If this sounds like detective work, you are right on the mark.

CHRONIC DISEASE vs CRONIC CONDITIONS

So, what is the difference between a chronic condition & a chronic disease. Is it possible to reverse these? Broad definition of chronic disease are illnesses that are prolonged, do not resolve spontaneously & are rarely cured completely. Chronic conditions such as irritable bowel or gastric reflux may not be labeled as a chronic disease, but again it is just a matter of words. What’s important is that many can be prevented and if one is already present, the outcomes can be improved by reducing the risk factors.

It is vitally important to accept the concept that everything is connected & this is very good news, the reason being that once a person takes full responsibility for the working of the total picture, the outcomes can change dramatically. That is not to say that all diseases will reverse completely, but once a person makes healthy lifestyle changes that include nutrition, stress & emotional management, as well as exercise, the body begins to heal & recovery is on the way. It may be that chronic pain is reduced, blood pressure normalizes, or digestion improves.

Just a word of caution here. Please discuss all lifestyle change programs with your physician before starting. You may be taking certain medications that will need monitoring as your blood sugars stabilize. If you are over-weight you will probably begin losing stored fat. If you are under-weight, your body will respond in healthy ways to your improved lifestyle changes. It is not uncommon for certain types of medications to need a dose adjustment. The physician may choose to actually eliminate certain medications as your body begins to respond to these changes.

This program will present information that may appear very simple on the surface. You might even view it as far too simple for managing any perceived large problems. Make no mistake. The answers to big problems are often very simple indeed. Most answers are subtle, and this is the actual reason for the lack of success. True long term success lies in doing the same simple, subtle things over & over, & then over & over again. Boring? I don’t think so. This is where the tools of persistence & continuity come into play. This book & workshop are about developing these powerful assets.

While there are many kinds of eating disorders & food addictions, many individuals are simply disorderly eaters who often have difficulty planning, or finding  time to shop or cook .They may eat many meals out or prepare them out of their freezer or take-out. Meeting the Imposter Self

Automatic Journaling opens the mind in new ways. There’s always some surprise waiting. My “Journal Master” points to that ridiculously big folder of areas where I obstruct. Typical of me….knowing something is asking to be addressed, but I’d prefer not to go too deeply. Like knowing my refrigerator needs to be cleaned out, but it’s never the right time. Just another way that I obstruct my progress and growth.

When I first started doing this type of journaling, I rarely touched my most “unattractive areas”, but I’m older now and feel more comfortable in my own skin. Still, opening these areas of my life is never an easy choice, but knowing that benefits only come from getting down and dirty, I take a cleansing breath and bring pen to paper. I may be willing to go into an area, such as the obstruction folder, but where to begin? Willingness to take the introductory step is one thing, but where do I place my foot? Now, if a patient asked me this, I would have an answer on the tip of my tongue, but not for mySelf? Why is it so much easier to give advice to others?

My Journal Master is brimming with answers to my questions. Giving me many insights, all helpful. I’m reminded that Automatic Journaling brings answers and plans quickly. It’s a very powerful resource….Reminded that’s it’s easier to be the Teacher Self than the Student Self. The Teacher part brings confidence, focus and Knowledge. While the Student Self may have some Knowledge, it is often not fully developed. The connection to Spirit is lacking. This under-developed part also brings baggage, some of it very old, dank and dark. Reminded that all “carry-ons” must be put aside if one desires to accept Knowledge and then to actually change. These two go hand in hand. Once a rubber band is stretched, it never returns to it’s original form. This is a given.

While we all have unattractive or difficult areas, most of us choose not to see them. Common baggage for me includes hiding my truth. I call this my “imposter syndrome.” Simply put….pretending. How much of me is pretense and how much is truth? How much is Student, how much Teacher? If I’m playing my therapist, parent or colleague/friend role, this can set the stage for “pretending”. Some pretending scripts read that “everything is fine in my life. I’m free of problems. I’m better than you.” All hogwash. When I am in those roles, I can sense my “imposter Self” roaming around behind me with the sign…liar, liar. Thinking, if people really knew the “real me” what would they think? Just about to feel guilty about this when my “Journal Master” puts up the STOP SIGN.

Lighten up. Truly, life is one big “stage performance”. My character changes as the scenes evolve. Sometimes she must slip into Teacher or Parent or Adult Self. Even if this role is not perfect, she gets to utilize the power/Knowledge she has collected to this point. It’s rather like the student nurse versus the graduate nurse versus the registered nurse. All take care of the patient from the Teacher Level, but each one is different unto itself. This is also how we grow and mature. There is always a level of pretence. This is the way the mind works. Of course, balance and awareness are key. The student nurse knows she is not the registered nurse, but to the patient, she is a teacher.

I remember having this “imposter syndrome” after my children were just born. One moment I was a pregnant woman and then all of a sudden, I was a responsible parent. How strange this felt. I was both proud of my position but could feel my “liar liar” Self hanging out in the background. “Be careful you don’t kill him. You…a parent?? Don’t be ridiculous.”

This imposter Self hangs around me quite a bit. It seems that whatever “scene” I’m playing, it’s never far away. Cooking for company, being a wife, promoted to a new job, even shopping for groceries….yes, that damn shopping cart. Hoping I won’t run into any of my patients who will scan my cart, finding the two packages of Hershey dark chocolate. What does that say about me as a “therapist who specializes in eating issues?” You guessed it….liar liar! ( pants on fire ), retorts the nasty childSelf.

My “Journal Master” instructs me to go to my breath and release the garbage that has dripped onto the page of the journal. A good place to clean, clear and organize my mind.

Down, deeper down. Feels good. All of the above resembling a big burp.

As I sink into the chair, the imposter part of me wanders away, shrinking as she goes. With every breath, she becomes smaller and smaller. Realizing that I can utilize my breath to shrink her whenever she appears. In the past, I’ve been afraid of this part of me. She reminds me of Hester Prynn, the protagonist in Hawthorne’s “Scarlet Letter.” I’ve worked diligently throughout my life to keep her in the background, but she only became stronger and more insidious. But no longer, for I am in charge of who plays in my moment to moment drama, as well as the script design. I also design the set. Yes, I’m the writer, producer, and director.

I’m led to the area for managing Student Self to Adult or Teacher Self. It’s a big wall, filled with indicators and control dials. Each indicator is a line having its own balancing or measuring device, rather like the sound system on my computer. There is a separate unit for the many areas in my life. Some related to health, relationships, money, prosperity, work, and separate projects. In some areas, the indicator shows that I’m at a lower or student level. In others, I’m well into my teacher/adult level, and others, somewhere in the middle. As I turn a dial upwards, plans appear on my mind screen, showing me the way to become more adept in this particular area. Yes, this is a powerful growth area. It’s clean, clear and decisive. Once again, I’m in charge.

The accompanying images playing in my mind are real, now inviting me inside to explore, play and grow. I’m on my way…

Waking the InnerChild for Change

Even small infants are treated to sugary treats by doting parents who often have no idea that they are setting up a life long addiction in their precious offspring. In fact, most parents would deny that they do this at all. Many would insist that they only provide the very best nutrition for their children. Parents bring children to my office for a myraid of problems, but rarely because of eating issues. I meet up with nail biters, skin pickers, attention-deficit, temper tantrums & those that don’t want to go to sleep at night. After the parent has finished filling me in on the problem of the moment, I begin my exploration of the food-connection. Over & over again I hear that these kids eat healthy foods & balanced meals. Then the truth is uncovered as we discuss what truly goes into the mouth of the youngster over a twenty-four hour period. This is why knowledge, coupled with heightened awareness is so very important.

MEET SARAH

I’d like to share a patient history here with you. Sarah was only five when she came to my office. As she was fair skinned & blonde, I had to look closely to notice that she had no eyebrows or eyelashes. In fact, a good portion of the hair on her head was also missing. Her Mother had cleverly combed it so it wasn’t so noticeable. Sarah suffers from trichotillomania, or compulsive hair pulling. Although there have been no epidemiological studies to identify the actual number of people with this condition yet, it is estimated that in the United States alone, there are probably between 6 to 8 million sufferers of trichotillomania.

According to Dr. Doris Rapp, the author of Is This Your Child, children with tricotillomania respond well to dietary change including reduced sugar intake. Sarah’s mother maintained that her nutrition was healthy, but my assessment didn’t agree. Over 85% of Sarah’s intake was in the form of very high-glycemic or refined sugars. On a side-note, her mother confessed to eating sugar out of the sugar bowl !

The first order of business to help Sarah was to redesign her eating plan, as well as eliminate a good number of the sugar foods. While it’s a true challenge to clean up a child’s diet, it is possible. It helps to allow the child to participate in the planning & shopping. Self-hypnosis etches new mind programs, helping the child manage the left-over stress, once the food stress is in control.

KNOWLEDGE HOOK

Learning to listen to your body is one of our most important holistic tools. The cell managers communicate with you through body sensations. The process of body listening is known by many names including mental biofeedback. We choose to take messages through the practice of body scanning. This technique is taught in the top stress reduction clinics of the world & is a way of re-training the body to release stress chemicals. The body and mind often have much to say about the food connection.

You will be learning more about working with body sensations later on in this program. For now, let us focus on the food connection to body sensations. If you are not eating a balanced or sufficient diet, your body will produce stress hormones that will communicate with you through body sensations. These stress chemicals include insulin, adrenaline, nor-epinephrine and cortisol. Some corresponding body sensations could include headache, muscle spasms, weakness, lightheadedness, poor vision, nervousness, exhaustion, fatigue, mood swings, as well as a variety of tension related symptoms.

Most of us tend to eat on automatic pilot, without any concern for the resulting mind & body chemistry. As we travel through our day, we might have a tendency to pick up small snacks, cookies, candy, pretzels, coffee, soda or juice. Perhaps a coffee mug lives on your desk. Each time you eat or drink, your body must perform its chemical balancing act, making special effort to keep the body in balance. If you continue along in this way, day after day, the body often develops food stress, or the inability to manage, especially if the rest of the nutritional intake is poor or inadequate.

INNER MOTIVATION EXERCISE

Take a moment to elicit your relaxation response. Tilt your eyes up slightly, placing one of your cells up on your mind screen. It doesn’t matter where it comes from. Each & every time you eat something, the food rings the doorbell of the cell & the cell manager cannot say no to the delivery. If the delivery is healthy & timely, the manager is delighted, but if it is unhealthy & untimely, the manager is in trouble.

Feel how good it is to know that you do know this now and that you have powers beyond what you thought before you had this knowledge. We are motivated towards and away from. This imagery exercise is a good example of both. Be sure to place it in a place of honor on your road map.

KNOWLEDGE HOOK

Boosting the immune system is another important focus of living holistically. The immune system is the defense system of the mind & body against microorganisms. One of the most negative results of excessive levels of stress, or poor body management is its effect on the immune response. This is often seen is someone who has frequent colds & other infections. There is much research in progress regarding how stress affects the immune system, especially regarding autoimmune diseases including allergies and cancer.

There is also the psychological aspect of seeing oneself as a frequently ill person. This can be potentially damaging to the self-image & self-esteem, thereby directing outcomes not in keeping with high level functioning.

How you choose to eat directly affects your immune system. There is little discussion about this fact of life. The problem is that we tend to be asleep to the needs of the body in the now, but more so in the needs of the body in the future. What you eat today has an outcome down the road as well. Imagery and self-hypnosis will help you to wake up & place permanent wellness programs into your subconscious mind. The work you are doing here is not difficult, but it is awake-work & this is where the difficulty lies for most people.

INNER MOTIVATION EXERCISE

Relax as before and bring forth one of your cells. This time I want you to go inside, observing the manager fighting an invader. This one happens to be a bacteria delivered at the water cooler. Notice the manager is looking for supplies in the way of deliveries of food & beverage. You know what you delivered today, so notice this & how the manager responds to what is available.

Notice the state of affairs in the cell based on the deliveries of the past week. Notice the response of the cell manager. Open the door & notice that healthy supplies have arrived. Observe the cell manager in action as the bacteria invasion is managed. Know how important your behaviors and habits are to outcomes. Take this moment to make a commitment to a better relationship with your body.

KNOWLEDGE HOOK

Food allergies & sensitivities are not uncommon especially in those with sugar addiction & eating disorders. Common ones include wheat, corn & dairy. If there is a history of alcohol problems in a family, even if that individual does not drink or is a child, it is not uncommon to have grain allergies. These often surface with accompanying personality or behavioral changes including compulsions, anxiety and depression.

You are working to be aware of how your mind & body react to what you eat & drink. As awareness develops connections may become clearer, an allergist may need to be consulted. Sometimes it is as simple as removing a particular food group, then reintroducing it later on. Otherwise the food group may need to be removed permanently to manage the symptoms. In the long run, even though this may not be poplar, the end results will far outweigh the enjoyment of the offending food or food group.

INNER MOTIVATION EXERCISE

The subconscious mind remembers & will pull information together for you. If you have lots of body communications, ask your subconscious mind to remind you to observe particular foods in relation to these outcomes. Ask to be alerted with flags.

Sometimes we are so lost in automatic pilot that we simply forget about what happened the last time we had problems with a food. As you learn what you body has to say about something you eat or drink, you will be able to study it more carefully. It’s amazing how common food sensitivities are. Relax for a moment, seeing yourself requesting this service offered by your own subconscious mind.

You are learning to observe yourself in relation to food “as if” you were under your own microscope. You will get very good at self-observation & this will take you to safety, to higher health, as well as to optimum performance. Sometimes you will have to begin again, returning back to basics. This is not failure, but re-structuring. Whether you come back once, or a hundred times, this is where you come. It helps to know this. This way you won’t be left wandering through life not knowing what to do or where to go. After all, you are only human!

Pulling the Plug

One never knows when a plug is going to be pulled, or a lesson is going to appear.

Some plugs have more impact than others. But even small plug pulling can provide an opportunity for “roads less traveled.”

Yesterday we lost our cable connection. No TV, no internet, no phone. Thinking it would only be for a few minutes, I went on with my life, but after an hour my ansy-Self checked it. “How long is this going to be? What if it is off all night????” And yes, it was. The worst scenario. Having to make “small conversation” through the entire evening. I was stunned to feel my uneasiness and displeasure with having to do this. Of course, I could have read a book or spent some time writing, but I found mySelf more interested in my emotional reaction and the behaviors that accompanied them.

“How will we know when it has been restored?” My husband’s concern. So, I wasn’t alone in this world of not liking my patterns disturbed. “Let’s leave the television on, so when it comes back we’ll know immediately.” Oh…immediately. Certainly wouldn’t want to miss a minute of anything trivial.

I decided to do “nothing of the sort”. Instead, inviting my “journal master” to join us, I suggested that this would be a good time for us to converse at some deeper level, I mean something other than what was found on the last refrigerator hunt. Or, what should we do on the weekend, etc. “Deeper level??” Sensing the uneasiness, deciding to ignore the emotion, “just begin” said my “journal master.”

Rather like “speak-journaling.” Oh…will secrets slip out as I let go or jump off the cliff? “Would that be so terrible…to speak my truth?” Sensing mySelf removing my protective jacket, my words feeling permission to flow. Like opening the faucet. Shifting in the chair, releasing some tight areas, the words enjoying the freedom from the obstructions. Asking mySelf, “How often do I practice obstruction?” Practice obstruction. Now there is an interesting concept. But yes, I do this habitually. There are so many ways to do this. Some are direct, while others in-direct, such as living in my private patterns….that have now been removed by the cable company. The cable company as Therapist. Comcast CEO sitting at her desk. “Exactly what will happen if we turn off the service to homes all over the city? ” Her desk? Well, yes. This is more woman-speak. Apologies to my male counter-parts.

My counter-part is waiting in anticipation of what comes next. Now, my obstruction coat is invisible, but I’m sensing that he knows I have it off.

I hand him a copy of my Therapist’sCOUCH blog. I honestly don’t know why, but it seems like a good jumping off point for the evening’s proposed deeper conversation. ” Do you really post this on the internet?” Well, yes I do. “People actually read this?” Well, yes they do. “Why?” I honestly don’t know. Perhaps it helps them in some way.

Flowing now…

“I never realized you had so much stored anger that went back to your childhood.” Well, it’s not something I’d discuss at the end of a work-day or over dinner. Besides, it’s my inner work. Things I want to explore and put to rest on my own. Noticing that “inner work” is not a comfortable phrase. Too psycho-babble.

Realizing that as a therapist I have a tendency towards psycho-babbling, perhaps obstructing our relationship at some level. Something I can change. Never really thought about this before. Always so busy jumping from one activity to another. I tend to treat my life as an non-ending marathon that I’m obligated to run and run and run. That’s what is great about “therapy”, whether it be with a professional or self-administered. We stand still in quiet, non-judgmental observation. We witness our life as it has played out, or as it is playing out. We have the opportunity to spend time in areas that we often by-pass. In this instance my conversational tonality and choice of words. After all, I’m talking to my partner, not a colleague. I also wonder if this is a subconscious way of blocking or obstructing. My answer to this is….yes.

I ask my “journal mentor” to open other areas where I obstruct. Feeling like this is an opportunity to show me other aspects of my Self that will benefit this special journey.

Writing for the Food Addicted Listener

Sometimes I forget that I’m a writer because I spend a good part of my day designing & delivering self-hypnosis metaphor & suggestion “in the moment” for my patients/clients. Then it’s off to recording CD’s & mp3’s. Over the years I must have written & recorded over 1,000 programs. So, whether it be mind-writing or typing onto the computer screen, it’s quite a bit of writing.

For me, mind-writing is the most challenging. I never work with scripts in my office, the reason being that I want to communicate with the patient or client hypnotically & so I had to come to trust the process. Rarely do I know how I will word things or even what metaphor may come to mind. It may be one that I’ve designed before, but most of the time it is highly original & very patient/client specific. It’s in moments like these, when I’m able to touch that depth of creativity, that the heart beats a bit faster. Sometimes I sense a shudder or feel like laughing as these inner images jump out, seemingly having a life of their own. It’s a time of true disassociation from mySelf. I’m out of my own way & now able to be free with the process.

Some people aren’t familiar with what goes on in a project such as this. Here are some things to consider. When working with the SpokenWord, the vocal delivery is as important as the image itself. The famous quote, “timing is everything”, also goes along with this genre of delivery. And then there are the facets of the tonality, including the emotional marinade. So, writing & delivering the SpokenWord is a bit complex, but when one is tuned into the subconscious, everything seems to take care of itself.

MEET THE FOOD & SUGAR ADDICTED LISTENER

The writer of SpokenWords writes & delivers to a listener, so the writing needs to take this into consideration. If one were to look at my physical writing, it might appear quite different from that written for someone who is reading the work. In my case, I write for listeners who have specific issues or needs. In this blog entry I’ve chosen to address listeners with very specific addictions….those having to do with disorderly eating, sugar & food addiction.

Addictive listeners, no matter what their addiction, often have short attention spans. Focus & concentration levels are often lacking. Much of this has to do with body & mind physiology of addiction. That is why those harboring addiction do so well with the SpokenWord being presented in Self-Hypnosis . In the case of my work, I deliver it in a special format I’ve designed called “Interactive Self-Hypnosis. This is especially palatable for the food addicted individual, as they are drawn into the actual images & get to play in the playground of their own minds. What could be better? There is no judging or co-dependency. They are calm & relaxed, detached from their thoughts & emotions, with an invitation to a special event where they get to pick & choose & to participate inside the images or metaphors that they willingly accept.

Disorderly eating listeners respond to a full plate of carefully crafted images to meet their specific needs. These need to be delivered at just the right time…..not too early & not too late. Those with food or sugar addiction, or other disorderly eating patterns are usually restless & disorganized in their thought processes. Their emotions run high, forcing the stress chemicals to be produced at very high levels. This usually means lots of physical & mental tension & while that may sound like a negative, it is actually a positive for work presented in the Self-Hypnotic SpokenWord format.

The body & mind of the listener DO WANT to slow down & relax deeply. The body & mind are eager to enter a state called homeostasis or balance & all that is needed is to get the listener “out of his own way.” In the practice of medical hypnosis, it’s common for an emergency room patient to go into a positive, self-hypnotic trance quite easily, simply because the body & mind do want to go to that place of balance. Blood pressure normalizes; heart beat normalizes; blood flow slows. It’s quite remarkable to observe the power of the SpokenWord under these critical circumstances.

Once the listener is brought to deep relaxation, the creative work can begin. When writing & recording for the general public, the writing specialist needs to turn to generalizations about the subject matter. However, while sugar or food addicted individuals have many things in common, it’s important for the writer to remember that each listener is a separate individual, with different life experiences & different needs. There is also the consideration of the amount of audio time & just as in writing books, editing is an important part of the process.

When dealing with this particular group of listeners, over-worked subject matter, such as food choices, meal planning, portion sizes, meal timing, etc., tend to get glazed over in book format, but not so in Interactive Self-Hypnotic Imagery. The right side of the brain, the subconscious or child-mind, can be brought to this Interactive exercise with new excitement. Here everything is possible. One can fall in love with the process of getting all of this organized & in place. It’s fun again. Yes, it is possible to have a fresh start & to walk a healthy path…. the reason being that the listener is actually doing it & accompanied by positive & affirming emotions.

There are so many different images & metaphors for working through the food aspect of sugar & food addiction. All of them are “tasty.” But, this listener needs to travel to other areas & also has quite a bit of clean-up to do. While this might sound “distasteful”, it is not. In fact, it is more fun & games.

MEET THE EMOTIONS

Managing emotions is key for everyone. Sugar & food addicted listeners have their fair share of negative emotional states, many of them very old indeed, perhaps going way back to early childhood. It could take decades to take care of these in regular therapy, but with the power of the Self-Hypnotic SpokenWord, the listener can begin to tackle them right in the moment. The key is bringing the individual into the “identification center” & coming to understand the concept that he/she is NOT his or her emotions.

This technique of disassociation is made so much easier “in the moment”. Through the power of SpokenImagery, the listener is now empowered to manage past failure, fear of failure, guilt, shame, powerlessness, anxiety, etc. & to bring forward, or actively entertain confidence, self-respect, self-forgiveness, self-love, creativity & a whole host of others, most of whom probably haven’t been around through most of the individual’s life.

Thoughts are now known as real “things”….that can be managed, thereby empowering the listener. Yes, it is a new day & life experiences will play on a different stage from now on.

CLEARING THE PAST EXPERIENCES

Creative metaphor gives the listener the opportunity to clean the attic & the basement & then all the other rooms in the house. One only keeps what one wants or needs. Making this abundantly clear to the now “past-addicted listener”, invites in not only a new self-power, but a freedom to grow, create & achieve. Individuals in this category often have junk piled up that goes way back & for many reasons, these things have remained stock-piled. Presenting simple, but well-defined metaphors & bringing the listener into the action, can clear things up, often quicker & with less efforting.

This area of metaphor development is a joyful writing experience. My own mind feeds me one healthy image after the other. Road blocks move to the side & the way is clear.

FUTURE PACING METAPHORS

In this particular program, the metaphors for the future are all related to specifics for high level health. The listener participates “as if” this were all happening right now. The choice of words & descriptions become very important because one wants the listener to self-design & motivate his or her own program. This is key for long-term lifestyle change & it’s most important to make it as complete & enticing as possible.

OTHER ASPECTS

I believe in teaching the listener the basics of Interactive Self-Hypnosis “in the moment” & have included these techniques on this program, as well as in every program I write & record. This is the nursing me who knows that the patient or listener, must be made to be independent of the professional & so it is with this SpokenWord writing project. What does this mean? Well, it means knowing how to identify & release emotions & their thoughts in the moment & to re-program the mind for the positive images that are presented on the program OR those that their own subconscious mind has developed for them, for the creative mind now knows the direction & will want to participate as well.

The Self with Two Faces

Approaching my journaling with a reminder of the importance of meditating regularly and asking the mind to go deeper than before. This deepening takes me well below all the emotional garbage that is strewn in my current reality. Much of it has been blocking my creativity and spiritual connections. Just the opposite of what I want. I’m eager to work with my emotional childSelves, but desire to do this at a spiritual level and not from my ego-Self. The first is powerful, creative and healing; the latter offers little of anything.

I’m surprised at my level of anger, as well as the anger that surrounds me. As I become more aware, it seems like a plague. I’ve decided to shut off the TV and to stop reading the newspaper for now. Then there are the others who are so contaminated with anger. It’s so clear to me now….their “operating systems.” My reaction in the past was to move into my defensive mode, fighting to the finish. This is a very unhealthy pattern, one I’m interested in deflating or breaking completely. Of course, I realize this is a lot to ask, but I’m asking anyway.

Before meditating…

I’m going to use a technique from my past that worked quite well for me. I call it the “garbage can.” Opening my journal, pen on paper, requesting the pen to locate anything and everything that is blocking my mind today. Just a quick mention is all that is needed. The power of awareness. Noticing and releasing, leaving the creative space open. Inviting the Self to enter deeper levels. Lots of junk today. As the pen puts it to paper, all seems rather ridiculous. I’ve always had a churning mind, even as a child. I feel like I’m vomiting some of this. Some of the same themes hit the paper.

First, it’s the “to do lists”…the never-ending “to do lists.” But there is more. Here come the things that want to be on the to-do list but haven’t been listed as yet. In a way, they drive me crazier than the actual list. Constant shuffling. Never a moment of peace. Needing and fighting to win agreements, things that are wrong with our house, being interrupted and tensing my body as I pretend that it doesn’t bother me, which it always does. That’s a laugh unto itself. That part of me is hyperactive, just waiting for that button to be pushed. Here comes some more. The need to exercise at a higher level, walk further, harder, push those weights, setting more goals than I could achieve in a lifetime. Here they come…the never-ending goals, some as dreams, others in parts like wounded soldiers, goals carrying lists, goals pounding on my mind, goals, goals, goals. Goals choking me. Never, ever finished and never will be.

I feel the anger rising in my throat…leave me alone. But, they won’t because I’m addicted to them, just like my eating disorder. I hate them, but I love them for they are what I am. How sick is this? My “journal master” says nothing. It’s as if I never spoke. Feeling like a crazy person needing some sort of restraint. Restraint? Of course. My eating disorder. That is a restraint. Yes, I know all about restraints… I’m requested to “shhhhhh” now…

Meditating and deepening…

“Garbage can” away… following my “master”, going deeply into the chair, utilizing the “deeper down dial” that works so well, especially when debris has been removed. The regular dial has five levels, but I an requested to go deeper today where I can enter levels of my spirituality and creativity that have been absent from my life for so long. A special gift, rewarding me for working in this very difficult area and not backing away. Thank you. It feels good to go deeper and the journey is rather speedy, like the express elevator in a tall building. Passing floors that have no purpose for today. Perhaps another day, but not today. I’m grateful, for I am really tired from shoveling garbage.

Arrival…

The elevator door opens and the “Light” greets me. I want to bask in it. I need to, but I’m moved along. The message is “that I don’t need anything.” I just think I do. I have everything inside of me, including my Highest Spiritual Nature. Sensing a spring breeze touching the top of my head. It’s been so long since I’ve felt a breeze. I’ve been out of touch, blocked by so much debris and anger, not even noticing. Asleep for it. Like being in a smoke-filled room, unconscious and smothered with the poisonous gas.

Waking up is both delightful and challenging. Asking to see the blockage means being willing to look with acceptance. Not a strong suit for me. I’ve been fighting for so long. No wonder I’m tired. My biggest opponent is me, mySelf and that part comes towards me. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. She is beautiful and ugly, like someone with two distinct faces. I tear as I write this. Something touching my soul. I feel so sorry for her, yet I admire and love her at the same time. Like a mixing bowl of emotions, all releasing themselves. Goodness…

The children come forward carrying their toys. Seeing them in a new light now. Understanding their meaning and importance to the protection and release for the child who had no other way. But, I am no longer that child and so the release must be re-designed. The part of me with two faces shows me some of the ways I’ve collected anger and how I handled or tried to release it. Try is the operative word because it was impossible to truly release my anger with inefficient or addictive tools. Instead, they destroyed me further. Now, the two faces me is showing me a living diorama that displays how I even enjoy the anger. Giving permission for entering addiction.

Additional parts of my life experience are becoming clear, like a fog lifting. Realizing much more is opening to me now. I’m grateful, for this is very fertile ground for creative planting.

I’ve been away…not on vacation, but on my own journey of self-honesty. It’s not something I raised my hand for, but my body & mind decided to shut down business as usual until I took the time & personal space to address some of my own issues. Oh? A therapist with issues? Why not? Everyone else has them!

It’s been several years since my body decided to take a trip into the dark abyss of illness. In a way, I was excited because I knew that once I started to feel better physically, I still had to fully recover & it is in that time-space that an inner journey would take place. I know from past experiences that my mind knows where to go, but living life “as usual”, never affords me the time to arrive at that special destination…the place that holds the questions, as well as the answers.

Two whole weeks away from work, desk, computer, phone & even a meaningful conversation of any length. Days & nights consisting of sleep & more sleep. No need to worry for this is the preparation for the journey that would take place very soon. No special preparations necessary. The body would alert the mind when the time was right & I would simply find myself there.

It happened in the middle of a morning at the end of the second week or so I seem to recollect. I didn’t do anything special, just took some Tylenol, closed my eyes, waiting for the pain to go somewhere else. Instead, the pain opened, just like a door in the middle of my forehead. I recall a long hallway, dimly lit, but appearing friendly, as if it was expecting me. I sensed a lack of hesitation on my part, a wanting to go in & down the corridor…starting to feel better, a little stronger & clearer despite the pain waving me on. The pain no longer had meaning, other than to be some sort of director to the scene. I didn’t seem to mind it’s presence because it was the one thing that remained familiar to me, rather like a touchstone. As I moved further down the corridor, I no longer felt a need for its presence & so as if it could read my mind, it stepped to the side, becoming part of the wallpaper.

I was not asleep, but instead very much awake. I know this because I opened my eyes & looked around the room where I was resting. Everything seemed the same & so I simply chose to go back. There was no difficulty in getting back to that place. That in itself was interesting because before getting sick my level of concentration had been waning.

I found a chair & sensed an invitation to sit down. There was no one there or at least no one that I could see or even sense. The chair was comfortable & began pulling me further down into it, not enough to frighten me, but enough to let me know that I was to be there for a while.

The next thing I remember was the fog. I’ve lived in England, so I do know fog, but this was a different variety. Very colorful with blurred images that seemed to be lining themselves up & then leaving to the left. I started to become aware of what things were, despite never hearing any voice or instruction. It was simply a sense of inner knowing that was accompanied by a feeling of deep certainty. Things not only needed to leave, but they simply left on their own. No efforting, no decisions to be made, no thinking things through, just peaceful exiting. My body began to feel lighter as if I was floating upwards. Now, in my usual awake state, I would not have been accepting of any of this. My tendency is to hold on & never let go, but that part of me wasn’t present at this time.

Now I found mySelf standing in the back of my body. I placed my hands on my shoulders & could feel them, but I was definitely outside of myself. I walked to the right side of “me”, then to the left & then found I could float up & look down at myself. I was aware of where tension had been stationed inside my body. I also understood that my mind was not in my “head”, but instead in all parts of my body, experiencing the tension as blockages. I was then invited ( I don’t know by whom ) to reach down & remove a block. The blocks were rather small, but when I removed one, it grew in size. I chose another one & this one also grew, but not as big as the first one.

I was instructed to place the blocks on the table & somehow knew that I would be spending time with these. The answers I was seeking, even though I didn’t know the questions as yet, would be given to me by the blocks.

At this moment I came to the realization that I was hardly alone, but instead, there were many “beings” with me, each one an instructor of sorts. I didn’t see them, but their presence was obvious to me. I also understood that they had been assigned to me, to walk me through my healing & then into a clearing, where my purpose or work would be synthesized by them. I would also become acutely aware of the emotions that would be part of my life from now on forward.

This was not to be a one-time meeting but would happen frequently to be enhanced in meditation. My body would be welcomed, but I am not my body. It is simply a conduit for moving around the Universe. My focus in this regard would be changing & there was really nothing I had to do.

I found myself opening my eyes, fully returned to the room & my bed. There was nothing else. No fanfare, no lights, no angels, no eureka or ah-ha…just a knowing that change had happened & perhaps for the first time, without any struggle.

Before I became ill I had been working on many different projects, always feeling like I was chasing myself. It’s become clear to me what parts of these have left & what has replaced them. These are not plans that I worked out in my usual way, but instead, an inner knowing of what I am to do.

Taming the Beast Within

I address the workshop about the above quote. In other words, what works for you & what doesn’t? In order to know what you want, first, you have to complete a self-evaluation or assessment.

THE ART OF SIMPLY NOTICING

We want to bring the beast out into the sunlight where we can study it in detail. We cannot change what we cannot see. Like anything else, we need to become fully aware, really getting to know this part of ourselves.

Through keen observation, you will become acutely sensitive to the fact that you are not your inner-beast, but rather his/her observer. This is KEY in order to change. If not, the self-image & esteem become like coats that can’t be unbuttoned.

As your awareness develops, you will begin to enjoy yourself more & more in your everyday life. Certain characteristics of the beast will begin to stand out. He can appear as your best friend but left to his own devices, he can make you miserable. He will promise happiness, but lead you to periods of intense anxiety, sadness, anger & eventually emptiness.

You will start to observe that the beast has a very complex scheme of rules, regulations, shoulds & ought to’s. He’ll quietly tell you that if you don’t do what he tells you, no one will love you, that you must be number one, you must strive for perfection, you should not show anger, you should be grateful for everything & anything because basically, you are undeserving. In addition, you should submerge yourself in self-doubt & worry. He will ardently keep you thinking in the past & future, as far away as possible from the real world & the present moment.

BEAST BELIEF SYSTEMS

The beast or negative self-esteem has some strange ideations that are woven into his belief systems. These are presented to you as truths. Here are a few examples.

Your true self is unlovable; fast is good & slow is bad. To show sadness is to be weak or childish or unreliable or overly dependent. Nice girls don’t enjoy sex & certainly, nice girls don’t show that they enjoy sex. Asking for what you want is selfish. Showing anger is sinful, childish, unprofessional & totally unacceptable. Something terrible is going to happen. Men are better leaders than women. Worry has value. Anxiety has value. Guilt has value.

BRINGING THE INSIGHT HOME

I ask the group to think about their own beliefs that have been presented as truths by their beast-in-residence.

TAMING

Taming the beast is simple, but not easy. Becoming aware or learning to pay attention to your thoughts, thought patterns & habits is a good beginning. The art is to simply notice & not to get involved in thinking about what you are noticing.

How does one do this?

You might like to practice with inanimate objects to get a real feel for the process. Choose any object in your view. Pretend that you are a camera & carefully study the object from all angles. Pretend that you have never seen it before. Examine the shape; how does it feel; what about the texture; how does the light hit it from different angles? This is the way you want to begin to look at your thoughts & judgments.

These are focusing exercises or exercises in concentration. You may find it easier to do them in a quiet place with few distractions, but once you learn the process, they can be done anywhere & anytime. An interesting & useful side-effect of these exercises is a feeling of peace or relaxation, exactly what your beast will despise. Learn to go slowly & take your time, becoming more aware of just what is going on in your mind. The beast will attempt to distract you

Teacher in Residence

Fear is a huge blocking agent that needs to be addressed directly….in the moment & in a straightforward manner!….Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

Pam has entered the theater & is waiting for direction. For now, she is the student. I speak to her through a self-hypnotic image of teacher-Self. Pam will come to know this image through my spoken words & then I will ask her to invite the image to enter herSELF, gently merging & then allowing her to play out her very own teacher-in-residence.

The teacher speaks from the stage of the theater.

Be still now…..in fact, become very still & connect with what it feels like to be so still. Self-power exists in stillness & so practicing the art of inner & outer stillness is a requirement for managing all aspects of life. The level to which you can become still, as well as your ability to do so quickly, will determine the quaility of your SELFwork.

Quiet assertiveness….this is the mindstate for managing not only your fearfulSELF, but for any & all emotional transactions, be they with yourSELF or with others. Remember that you are a walking billboard…..SELF advertising….what you present is what you will receive. Present fear & then receive fear. Present confidence & then receive confidence. Present “quiet assertiveness” & observe what happens.

The workshop group watches in the theater of their own minds, each mind presenting different images that will program their own minds in positive ways. It makes no difference that this is about Pam & her issues. Positive progression is something everyone can experience from either reading, speaking or thinking about another. Each group member has now determined their own inner teacher. We are continuous students, learning at every turn. The same happens with the written word or spokenWORD on CD or mp3.

Pam is asked to pay attention to the scene being acted out on the stage. In this scene she is involved in issues that lead to future scenes, including bingeing & purging. There are relationship issues, as well as financial worries. She is able to see/sense the progression of these. Her emotional childSELF is wearing a worry/fear teeshirt & it’s clear that neither of these work to change the issues. Something else is needed. Now, Pam is being given authority to change the scene, the script & anything else that she chooses. Her teacher gives suggestions & Pam gets to try out different avenues. As this occurs, the forward scenes automatically change as well. 

As the workshop group observes Pam’s experience in the theater, they are programming their own minds for positive change, as well as building new creative techniques. All are integrating the image of TeacherSELF. In the future, this image will present alternative ways to solve everyday issues, bringing the participants to a higher level of performance & SELFcare.

Emotional Transactions

It’s common to hang out in our emotional state of choice. For some, this is can be more towards “neutral”, but for others, it can be a low or even moderate negative state. These include irritable, depressed, disinterested, bored, anxious, uptight or even belligerent. Lucky is the individual who wears a daily emotional coat of happy, peaceful, joyful, loving, pleased & the like. It’s much easier for the latter to climb up further, so as to experience the powerful, creative emotion of Hot Desire.

LIVING IN NEGATIVE’S

Living in the negative areas presents many challenges, not only within the Self, but with others as well. In addition, when one area of life is in disarray, the owner doesn’t have to look far to find another. Emotional disorder & stress go hand in hand, bringing imbalance to the mind & body & keeping one far away from the helpful & creative subconscious mind. Addictions become easy answers for managing the discomfort. Here’s an unhappy thought; we can grow to like the negatives, even to love them & like with other bad relationships, they can be all-consuming. It’s like being locked in a prison of sorts & hiding the key from yourSelf. However, we can choose to stop.

It’s imperative to be able to locate emotional states “in the moment”, in order to release them. And, they must be released before being able to change one’s emotional experience to positive & then to go up the ladder to Hot Desire. I call these “emotional transactions”; trading one for the other….hopefully transacting for one of higher value!

MIND EXERCISE

Relax into the moment & release your body stress. If you have been following the workshop blog, you know how to do this. If not, pretend magnets are pulling you down into the chair where you are resting. Here’s a dial that you can turn to the left, thereby increasing the magnet pull. Feel how good it feels to have the body experience the magnetism. Stay with this for a moment or so. Next, notice that a child is standing by your side & the child is wearing a teeshirt with his/her name on it. This is your emotional childSelf & the shirt states your presenting emotion. If the child is big, the emotion is most likely big as well.

Sometimes we have multiple emotions & so many children may be present. Aida, one of the workshop participants is noticing that “inadequate, tearful & uptight” are standing together. Cary sees that “hopeless & helpless” are holding hands. Gina senses “relaxed & focused”.

Negative-based emotions are heading for the light. It’s down the path over there. Image it. If you can’t bring an image into your mind, just think it. The emotions sit under the light & the rays fill their bodies. Black drops fall from their fingertips. The emotions become smaller. Sense or think all of this.

In this moment you are planting a subconscious mind program. Positive emotions are now coming to the light & filling, becoming bigger. Image or think about this happening. Practice with both genres of emotions, even if they aren’t yours. A positive subconscious mind program will be placed anyway.

Coming from behind the light is an image of a powerful, positive emotion. Read the teeshirt. This is “Hot Desire.” Hot Desire is carrying a book & presenting it to you. Sit down on the bench over there & place the book on your lap. Notice that your name is on the cover & that you are the author. The book is filled with “Hot Desire” experiences, some coming from your own mind library & others coming from things you have seen, or gifted from people you know who have had this genre of experience.

Open the book & locate a “Hot Desire” image. Each image tells a story. Listen, as the story is “remembered” to you. ( This is not a grammatical error….but a special way of playing with the inner mind.) This is a time when you felt a huge desire for something….. it’s BIG.  Sense it & when you have connected with the “sensing”, tap on the picture gently. As you tap the picture will open & you will now sense yourSelf in the middle of the Hot Desire experience. The pulse of the desire is over there. Touch it. Next, touch your heart. You are transferring the sensation to your major pump organ.  Sense it inside of you. If this seems odd to you, just play with it. This is a game of sorts, but your subconscious mind believes “everything” you are doing. You are busy capturing the emotional state of Hot Desire.

If you like, go through the book, becoming aware & then tapping open different Hot Desire experiences. It’s vital to sense them, so do take the time to do this. Each time, find the button & transfer the sensing to your heart. You can enter the experiences of others & make it your own. Think about others who you have known to have these experiences. For example, Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Kwan….anyone you know or have heard about that truly, truly wanted something!! These desires are very hot & it is because of their high temperature/emotional programming content, that these individuals can ride through & stay motivated for long periods of time.

You now have these “rememberings” inside of yourSelf & I’d like you to take an image of something you truly want & hold it in the palm of your hand, just as if it were a living model. Next, touch your heart & then sprinkle the Hot Desire that is stored there right onto your working image & observe it “firing up.” This is an emotional transaction & one of great value.

Building Hot Desire to Achieve

I’m waiting for the workshop group, wondering about the overall level of desire that’s coming to greet me. This will determine how I go about designing the classwork, as well as the metaphors I’ll choose. Every class is different & even  though there are always participants with a high level of desire to learn new things, it’s rare for the whole group to be so invigorated.

Usually, the desire level is low to medium. This brings me to the point regarding teaching or writing for adult learners. While it’s vital to strike a balance, one wants the learners to leave the session or workshop with at least a high-level desire to carry on what they have experienced, but perhaps more importantly, to feel very strongly about traveling to an even higher level. This is my goal here.

I like teaching & writing for adults. Each individual has been on a unique journey & most are willing to open their luggage & share, especially when the environment is conducive to safe exploration. It’s my responsibility to provide that because I know the more people are willing to open & share, the better the workshop.

Teaching or writing from the position of true living experiences in the moment, is sure to raise the level of desire in each participant. It truly doesn’t matter if questions or life experiences take us off the track I’ve planned. It’s my responsibility to take what I’ve been given, to mold it into positive teaching material, perhaps reframing it to carry a much-needed message, now embedded with real, living, personal power.

MOOD CHECK

Remember those “mood rings” that turned different colors, supposedly reflecting your mood? I seem to remember that “hot desire” was bright purple. Black or gray indicated “not interested.”

We all have a “standard” mood that we wake up with & maintain this for most normal experiences. We call this our personality, but it truly isn’t. It’s simply our mood of choice. On occasion, we may change it, but most of the time we wear it like an old coat.

I ask the group about their “coats”….This conversation will break the ice, build some rapport, letting me know where everyone sits in this regard.

The coats are being hung up one by one. There are 3 depressed coats, 6 high stress, 2 quiet & timid, 3 happy-go-lucky, 2 quiet & serious & 4 non-descript. This means that four people aren’t sure about their daily moods. Obviously, they are not very attentive to Self.

HOT DESIRE

We always begin where we are. The idea is to move from this position to one of hot desire. Usually, this is not going to happen in one fell swoop, especially when one’s daily mood tends to be on the negative side, or not known at all. I call these low to medium negative moods & it’s easier to move from this position to one of low-positive before even considering climbing up to “hot desire.”

Believe it or not, there are people who have never experienced true, hot desire, so this can even be frightening. When people who are tense are asked to relax deeply or to experience meditation, the release of the body often catches them unaware. This can be quite un-nerving both physiologically & emotionally. Sometimes this can be perceived as “having an anxiety attack” or tears can flow, causing embarrassment. So, it’s important for me to tread carefully. My group tends to be on the low to medium negative level, so I’ll bring them into images that will take them to a low-level positive experience.

I’ll have to hunt for these experiences but I prefer for the individuals to give them to me. I mentioned earlier that it is a good idea to work with personal experiences or stories. This will be a good time to collect some of them. I don’t want anything too big. I’m only going to low-level positive. These remembrances can be found accompanying small accomplishments, either current or from childhood. In this instance, I prefer current accomplishments because the group tends to be on the somber side. This didn’t happen overnight. Since  we’ve just met, I don’t think I’ll touch childhood right now.

Here are some examples that were easily gleaned from the group.

Harry sold his car last week. He felt great about it.
Sarah found out that her pain wasn’t anything serious. She felt relieved ,even joyful. Sarah was one wearing a depressed coat. Ralph received a good quarterly review at work & will receive a raise in salary. Jenna cleaned her garage, feeling a great sense of accomplishment.

While these may sound like insignificant things, they are going to be useful to the entire group because everyone can relate to these. I’ll have the group relax deeply into the moment & locate their mind screens. Next, each group member will appear with their new coat. Other members will be invited to try it on for size. One by one, each member will experience a positive shift in their own body chemistry. These are like gentle nudges, taking them out of their own old coats, into something more positive, but non-threatening. By the end of the exercise, the mood of the group will have changed.

Soon, we will be able to climb up to a medium positive mood while experiencing that in both body and mind. Hopefully, we will ascend to “hot desire.” Sometimes we have this within ourselves, but most of the time we don’t. And so, we need to get it from somewhere else.

Working with Imagery

I asked the workshop group if anyone had ongoing problems with anxiety, panic, or unrelenting physical or emotional stress. Every hand in the room went up.…Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

Imagery & its visual counterpart are natural skills that people utilize all the time. Children, with their vivid imaginations, work beautifully with both visualization & other forms of imagery. However, our general education often interferes with these innate skills & so we must go back & learn to improve our abilities to visualize, to image, as well as to increase, control & direct the same in the direction of the goal or desired change.

Imagery is everything. It is the crux of how we experience our bodies, environment, our relationships to others or to ourselves, as well as to our spiritual life. We image constantly. Unfortunately, the most common imagery consists of negative, non-trusting, insecure, failure-orientated, worrisome, highly judgmental inner audio & visuals. These images are often followed by the behaviors that come to match the blueprints, thereby reinforcing the negative images. Our goal is not to teach imagery, but to change & transform existing images into ones that form the basis for high-level living and health.

We buy inner programming every moment & our minds do what they are programmed to do. The work you have been doing in Awareness Meditation has allowed you to see, as well as hear some of this programming in the process. Observing the thoughts, emotions, listening to the inner audio programs & watching the ongoing DVD has given you the opportunity to see first hand how this automatic pilot programming has been working for most of your life. Now you have the tools to manage this programming & with visualization and imagery, you can actively change the DVD, thereby changing the outcomes not only in your mind but in your body as well.

Images are stored chemically, not only in the mind but also in the entire body. When they are recalled consciously, or unconsciously, the chemical program is replayed, often times enhanced in some way. We store many types of images including those involving all the senses; visual, hearing, feeling, taste & smell. For example, certain perfumes bring back remembrances of long ago, as does the smell of iodine or anesthetic. The smell of baking bread can evoke happiness, hunger, or even sadness if it is associated with a painful stored memory.

As we learn to observe inner programming, noticing what is helpful or not helpful as we go towards our goals, we can choose to make changes. Awareness is the very first key. It is most interesting to observe the patterns of thoughts, as well as the automatic responses we play out, sometimes in response to emotions or even relationships.

For example, some people play the victim or the judge when in the company of certain people. Start to become aware, encouraging yourself to notice this type of auto-response. Some patterns are very ingrained, but as you practice more & more Awareness Meditation Tools, you will bring these to conscious awareness, where they can be assessed. It is important to stay detached & non-judgmental as possible during this awareness work. The tools of Interactive Self-Hypnosis will make this easier. Remember to congratulate yourself for practicing these techniques. The subconscious mind loves to be congratulated & will be motivated to repeat this activity for you.

Another benefit of imagery I’ve not discussed is the actual change in the brain structures from this type of practice. Research indicates that a person who actively practices imagery develops more brain cells & more neuronal connections. We find an improved ability to concentrate, as well as retrieve stored information whether it is long or short term. Learning appears to accelerate & the individual is able to accomplish more with less efforting.

WORKING WITH IMAGERY is great fun. In this section, we will discuss the specific work we will be doing with images in the accompanying audio programs. The more we practice the better we get, and the better we get, the bigger the rewards.

We will be focusing on awareness tools, in and out of the workshop. We want to bring awareness to and enhance all physical senses; sight, smell, touch, taste, as well as the emotions. Practice during the day. Take some time to focus on each sense. For example, eat your lunch on your own in a quiet place, noticing the taste and feel of each movement & food involved in this activity. Sometimes it helps to close off one of the other senses, such as smelling the bath soap with your eyes closed. Taste the cheese without conversation, or close the eyes at the same time and feel it in your mouth. What does popcorn feel like as opposed to cheese? Notice we are not talking about taste, but feel. Most of us are highly visual or auditory. Smaller percentages are kinesthetic, or feeling. It is good to know what is your favorite sense, and then work with imagery to enhance the others.

As we begin to work with images we will begin experiencing them in new ways. We will go inside our pencil making it very big. We will go inside the walls of our house, and see what it looks like to look out into the room from inside the wall. We will practice seeing pieces of familiar furniture, feeling what it feels like to sit on it, stand on it & walk around it. This is the practice of 3-D imagery & is a very powerful tool in mind development.

We will be working on changing some of these images. In the Workshop we have a special camera for making images smaller, & then we can actually experience them in that size. Imagine sitting on a familiar chair that is now less than half the size. We can make things bigger, brighter, louder, softer. We can put things outside the houses that are inside and then do just the opposite. These exercises work to stimulate various sections of the brain, thereby changing their chemistry and increasing the ability to think and create. They help us remove boundaries & open us to change. We see what appeared to be impossible is now possible & choices we perhaps never considered can be seen as workable. New ideas seem to come forth with less effort.

We go on to experience being in our own body, rafting down the veins and arteries, looking around various parts, and seeing how food, exercise, sleep, and relaxation actually play out in our cells. This is your body and no one else’s. You are unique in this world & have a responsibility to care for your mind and your body.

You will be working with an album filled with images. Unlike a photograph album, this one not only has visual images but remembrances of all images from your past and those already pasted in for your future. As we work with this album we can re-experience and choose to change those which are acting as inhibitors to your goals. We practice with easy ones such as an image of any apple. We can make it taste even more apple-like, or experience eating an apple with no taste at all. We always make sure to leave our apple tasting just right!

We practice smelling, tasting, touching, and experiencing. There is an area for placing new images that have not been experienced and practicing with them right there. We even get to practice what it feels like to be someone else, and even someone whom we never met such as Einstein. Not a bad image, especially when taking a math test!

The practice of imagery makes life richer. It is like turning up the color and intensity of the things we have at our disposal to enjoy. It also gives us the tools for diminishing those things that are not beneficial to our happiness and health, and because imagery can be very specific, we don’t have to diminish everything, but just the area that is bothersome.

WORKING WITH IMAGINOLOGY allows us to utilize imagery in a larger area. The new images now take on life and action that can be designed and managed thereby giving power, control and encouraging the development of creativity. We seem to make changes in an effortless way. This process is free of judgment and criticism, and allows us to move confidently and stress-free through areas what may have caused difficulties in the past.

The audio programs connected to this workshop will enhance your inherent ability to design personalized metaphors for change. New skills will be developed allowing your subconscious mind to come forth with its own suggestions. Our own suggestions and problem-solving capabilities are always more powerful than those presented by someone else.

When we practice imaginology we see ourselves in the action, and can make it exactly as we would like or even better. Most of us live in a small inner world, rather like a corral. We want to learn to open the gates and go out to explore. We want to put old fears and negative programming aside. As we practice with these programs, you will begin to notice when the automatic negative programming is blocking you from expanding your horizons.

Self-Escaping

There are times when it feels good to stay inside a hypnotic negative addiction hole or even an emotional state, such as anger, hate, anxiety or depression. Wake up & pay attention to what’s going on….are you looking for someone to rescue you….to get you to stop either by love or by responding back in a negative way? If you are….it’s time to wake up & to break that dangerous pattern.….Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

We are all familiar with the above……including myself. People are often surprised when I tell them about my negative holes, as if I shouldn’t have them. Of course I do & many of them well-etched. Today was one of those days when an old, well-etched pattern tried to pull me into the hole. It was like I had one leg in & one leg out, tuned in but not submerged.

I was witness to that part of myself that doesn’t get to come out very often, saying “wow…sock it to him. This is fun!” I was keenly aware of the dicotomy of mySelf, wanting to stay in the negative hole place, but realizing the danger. I know what addiction is about & this is simply another facet of it. I know how the inner game works. I play around in the hole & then pay the piper later on, perhaps desiring or compulsing for junk food or wine. Then follows the tiredness of the body, depression of the mind & spending time trying to fix the mess I created. Not the way I had planned on spending the day.

RESCUE DEBACLE

Child Behavior – Demanding or blackmailing another to come to the rescue OR staying in wait. This is like waiting for a bus that never arrives, usually followed by a ‘victim party.”

Mature Behavior – Best choice….. rescue yourself.

Wisdom & Acceptance – Holes are common place in our lives & activate on occasion like volcanos.

Knowledge – The quicker one exits the hole, the less power it has in future eruptions.

No matter if it’s addiction or a negative emotion, it’s a common
failing to want to be rescued. Standing up & taking responsibility seems much more difficult, but just on the surface, for indeed, it is just procrastination & lack motivation that keeps you static.

Perhaps like Jared, you have even seen yourself bargaining or blackmailing in order to get what you want. Not a pretty picture & not a pattern you want to etch.

Jared, a patient of mine,  is an almost 40 year old business executive who is on the fringe of a divorce. “I have a permanent residence in my hole. As I’ve come to examine it with Interactive Self-Hypnosis, I find that it has room, rather like a house. In a way, I like it here. That truly frightens me. How could I actually like to be submerged in my anger, anxiety & depression?

The windows in my “hole house” are painted black, so I can’t see outside. There is nothing to break my hypnosis. I wait here for someone to push their way through my door & rescue me. I’ve been waiting a long time, but no one seems to have sufficient power to push the door open OR perhaps they don’t want to bother with me. I really can’t blame them.”

Jared would benefit from individual therapy, but even without it, he can begin to make progress by taking the mature approach. This includes becoming aware of who needs to push the door open & to pull him out……..himSelf. In deep imagery he can achieve this & most likely he will need to do this each & every time he senses that he is back in his “hole house” because it is deeply etched.

I’d like Jared to disassociate from the image of the house, perhaps by placing it in a diorama or model. In deep relax he can see/sense what goes on here & begin to effect changes. I suggest he put in new windows, paint the interior & exterior & decorate to his taste. I’d like him to consider re-naming the rooms, designing them in a positive creative way.

It will also help him to notice that he is not the hole, nor the house, nor his emotions. We’ll use the child-image for emotions. In this way he can be the mature adult & manage the child-emotions, just as if he were their positive father-figure. If he needs a mind-mentor, he can choose one from real life. It may or may not be his own father. This would depend on Jared’s experience with his own parents. But, in the theater of the mind, the subconscious mind will accept whoever Jared chooses to help him in this creative endeavor.

Thought Games

“Asking questions is a healthy activity & one should spend a good part of the day asking them. However, be sure to stay tuned in for the answers.”...Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

We tend not to recognize how many times we ask questions to ourselves during our waking hours. If you practice tuning into your own thought processes, you will hear them. Sometimes it’s almost laughable. I asked participants in a graduate seminar to write down some questions they remembered asking themselves on the way over to the meeting.

“I wonder if I’ll be able to find this place. Should I turn here?”

” How will I be able to understand this material since I have no experience in the field of self-hypnosis? Will I come across as a jerk?”

“I wonder if she can read my mind.”

“Should I stop & go to the bathroom before arriving?”

“What should I do if I fall asleep during the hypnosis?

“Will I ever get my eating under control?”

While we’re all great at asking questions, few of us tend to pay attention to the answers that are delivered in response to them. In case you were wondering, these answers come from your powerful & creative subconscious mind.

Think about some of your own self-conversations, especially those containing questions & notice if you expect answers, or are you just rambling on auto-pilot. If you are listening for the answers, kudos to you. However, if you are not, why not plan on doing so. You will be pleasantly surprised.

THE ANSWERING SERVICE

I like to image the subconscious mind like a big library & that’s not too far from the truth. Everything you have ever experienced, be it a thought, a sound, a taste, a touch, an idea is stored here & it’s all in order. All one needs to do to access something is to “ask” the right questions, so now you see how important questions can be. The stored material in the mind can also be utilized in other ways. This is where creative thinking comes into play & once again, “asking” the right questions.

There is so much to learn & experience when working with the subconscious mind that it is actually mind-boggling. Because the material & research is so vast, I like to teach through imagery. I encourage questions from my students, clients, readers & listeners because this gives me a new opportunity to design yet another teaching image or metaphor.

Here are some questions I received over the past few weeks.

Q – I’ve been following your blog & I’m very interested in the area of release or letting go. Here’s my issue. If I release something, why does it reappear in my life? How can I  clear to my subconscious mind if I don’t want this any longer? Is there a special technique of suggestion for this?

Behavioral & thought patterns are usually pretty heavily etched in the subconscious mind & tend to present themselves on automatic pilot or when triggered by certain experiences or other connectors. When you practice releasing or letting go, you are actually interrupting these old patterns & then placing something new in their place. It stands to reason that it may take a bit of interrupting BEFORE you begin to see or experience a lessening. It is important to interrupt each & every time you become aware of the thought or behavior you do not want. This is how you tell the subconscious mind that you do not want it any longer.

MIND EXERCISE

Notice whatever it is that you do not want. Label or name it, just as if it belonged in its own file. This type of “isolation” assists the subconscious mind in knowing exactly what it is. Next, breathe from your center. This slows the brain waves & will allow you to place a suggestion on your mind screen OR to give a verbal cue to your subconscious mind. I like to utilize a positive image on the mind screen…..something that I want. Because this follows the labeling & the centering breath, the inner mind understands this as a replacement. It doesn’t matter if the two are unrelated. The subconscious mind cannot judge. It just understands that you want to replace one with the other.

Q – I’m a secret eater & wonder how long it takes to get something like this under control. I can’t imagine living without bingeing on junk & sweets. The stress in my life is huge & this is the only time I truly feel at peace. Is there any hope for me?

Eating issues, be they secret or not, are multi-faceted & so it can take a while to get all of the facets into some sort of management plan. Imagery, especially re-framing can truly help to move things along a bit faster. I’ll give you an exercise in a minute, but what you also need are techniques for releasing your stress in a healthy fashion. Right now you are only getting to that peaceful place through unhealthy bingeing & that can prove to be a big health risk. As for there being hope for you, of course there is. No one needs to accept being held hostage to their addictions.

MIND EXERCISE

Relax into the moment. If you have been following the blog you do know how to do this. Tilt your eyes up & locate your mind screen. Place an image of a house. Notice you can reach in & open the door, just like opening the door on a dollhouse. Peak in & pay attention to what is going on. There is the kitchen, stocked with healthy foods, a gymnasium with state of the art equipment, a spa for relaxing, areas for resting, reading, socializing & a garden for meditating. An image of you is participating in all of these areas. Simply follow yourSelf around, noticing how content & at peace you are…. it feels so good to have a healthy discipline. This is just a start for you….I’d like to suggest that you visit this area before going to sleep each night & find out more.

Q – I’m interested in managing my thoughts & emotions, especially fear. I have social anxiety that takes a toll on my career. I balk at conflict & find it difficult to speak up when I have a different opinion. What’s weird is that people don’t know this about me. They think I’m all together. What kind of imagery would help me?

Yes, you are living behind a mask & so your self-efficacy is low. You can begin to design the “you” that you prefer to be. Your subconscious mind will believe whatever you tell it, as long as you relax deeply & energize the desired “you” with hot desire & positive emotion.

MIND EXERCISE

Relax deeply into the moment. Locate your mind screen. Place an image of yourSelf there. Now invite in others who you admire. You don’t have to know them, but stay focused on the characteristic that they have that you want to be a part of you. Have them line up & then……..one by one invite them to step inside you & leave their characteristic gift & then exit the other side of you. When all have passed through, notice yourself enjoying the inner gifts. Walk into different scenes in your life & experience these…. sense gratitude, peacefulness & perhaps most of all…….have fun.

BURIED ALIVE

I met up with Kate over the weekend. When she walked into my office, her back was bent over, as if carrying a heavy weight. The image was so real that I almost asked her to please put it down. She sat in the chair & looked up at me as if she were looking at me from inside a hole where she was residing. Kate is only 20 years old, but her burdens have aged her well beyond her years. It’s always sad for me to meet up with the Kate’s of the world.

I ask Kate to tell me about herSelf. She looks at me as if I am speaking a foreign language.

“What do you mean?”

This is a hiding, low self-image & self-esteem answer to my question. As a clinical hypnotherapist, I’m already forming the metaphors that will hopefully help Kate out of the hole. I still don’t know how long she has resided there, nor how stuck she was. However, my experience tells me that the right metaphors can yank her out, even if she prefers living down there.

I smile quietly, relaxing my body into the chair, looking to build rapport slowly, not wanting to frighten the bird. I communicate with Kate’s subconscious mind through spoken & unspoken words. There is no need to rush, no need to panic. While time is always an issue in our busy lives, we must stop rushing. It’s next to impossible to free the Self when rushing or when being with others who rush & push. The tonality of my voice delivers the chosen words of my own subconscious mind, somehow knowing how to travel forward.

“If you could give me anything you don’t want, what would it be?”

Kate smiles….“Oh, just one thing?” 

This is a good opening. The question was playful, bringing her into the metaphor without a direct challenge. Smiling back, I relax deeply into my chair, taking Kate deeper into a relaxed state. We are on our way.

“Let’s take a shopping cart & walk the aisles of your life, starting in the aisle of “right now” & then going backward. you can put as many things in the cart that you would like to give me.”

The metaphor forms a framework that allows the mind to open & to release. The release is paramount to freeing the Self. When we are highly cluttered it is often impossible to focus on the issues or problems. We are suffocating, but can’t seem to move the garbage so we can breathe. The baggage on Kate’s back indicated the level of clutter she was carrying around with her.

CLUTTER ISSUES

The truth about clutter is that it’s difficult to see, even if we are surrounded by it. This is true for both tangible & intangible clutter. It’s possible for someone to sit at a desk piled high with papers, magazines, old coffee cups, personal & business junk, etc. & not be aware of the disorganization. One can live in a house with clutter coming out of the walls & be blind to it. The refrigerator can be storing moldy vegetables, old take-out containers, empty catsup bottles & the like without being able to communicate with the owner.

It’s impossible to free oneself when one can’t see the clutter.

Kate resides in her hole because she believes she is safe from her confusion or clutter, but unfortunately, there is no hiding place. Also, residing in the hole is not free. There is rent to be paid & that can be quite hefty, as the hole is very demanding. Kate pays her rent by being swallowed by her compulsions & addictions that range from shopping to daily wine consumption.

But….If we choose to be free we can move along in life. However, we must be willing to see & then take ownership of the clutter, be it tangible or intangible. Changing behaviors & patterns will be part of the equation & that is how Kate will exit her hole.

TANGIBLE VS INTANGIBLE – WHAT TO CLEAN FIRST

The good news is that all clutter is related. As tangible clutter is opened & cleared, it’s intangible counterpart will also release. We begin where we are.

Clutter equals confusion. If the environment is confused, then the mind also lives in confusion. We tend to own too much stuff & have trouble releasing or letting it go. “What will happen if I throw that away? I’d better keep it. If I move it, then I won’t be able to find it. I’ll read that later. I want that. I need that. That makes me feel good. I’ll fix that later. When I have time I want to spend time with that.”

The conversations go on & on.

Clutter breeds clutter. We never seem to have enough. Shopping lists & desire lists tend to get longer & longer. We want & need more things. We equate things with feeling safe & contented, but it is fleeting. The compulsion to buy, to store, to hoard intensifies. The addiction is busily forming itself into its own monster shape. The credit card reports the story on the tangible side. Anxiety, tension, depression, lack of concentration tells the story on the intangible side.

Kate heads for the hole.

Kate pushes the cart down the first aisle. It fills quickly. We go back for another cart & it will be one of many. There is much that Kate wants to release & so this is good news.

Thoughts are Things

We all have an inside Self, but few of us truly get to truly know this part of us & for many, it remains a secret. Without getting to know yourSelf & developing a relationship, one tends to stay in old holding patterns. This is not surprising because few of us have been educated or trained to work with the different, distinct parts of our Self, nor with our body. Instead, we live on autopilot, absorbing whatever comes along…..often complaining that we don’t like what’s going on in our life.  Then, because the mind is a servo-mechanism, we get more of the same. This can not only get us into trouble but we miss out on working directly with our creative source, that part of the mind that is rather like a genie in the bottle.

While we have an inner or secret Self, there is no secret about how to communicate with it. The techniques to do so are really quite easy. The difficulty lies in developing both a practice discipline & then an application discipline. It’s rather like sports. Those who practice with the mind goal of being a weekend athlete will never reach the same level of play as someone who practices with the mind goal of going to the Olympics or becoming a professional athlete. It’s the same with training the mind.

DIRECTION – DECIDE ON WHAT YOU WANT & THEN ASK FOR IT.  THE REST WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF.

When I first learned meditation, I came to find out that my big issues weren’t with the actual practice, but with the idea of the discipline of meditating twice a day for twenty minutes. I remember my internal arguments, as well as the emotions that worked earnestly to get me free of this “burdensome” task. These emotions were not strangers to me & what amazed me was how they knew to turn up on occasions such as this. Each time they appeared, they were more & more powerful, displaying both mental & physical angst.

It took me a long while to decide on what I truly wanted & so the chatter & arguing lived in my mind & body for this entire time. Quite frankly, the inner arguing was exhausting. This is another example of how procrastination leads to burnout. This is a common happening that tends to repeat itself in most of my patients & so when I write CD’s or mp3 programs, I do have to address this issue, because if not, the reader or listener is not going to step into the action & to stay there.

The above “direction” is absolutely true. Once I committed to what I wanted, the rest simply followed. The key was not just the word or idea of commitment, but much more. For this, I utilized the written word. I spelled out all of the details of what I wanted “as if” I already had achieved it. Then, I emotionalized it. For those of you who are following the workshop blog, you already know about the inner mentor. Here was another opportunity to plug into this part of my creative Self.

When working with the development of the inner discipline, the outcome must be very clear & concise & there is no negotiation with the thoughts or emotional states. It is truly set in stone. When the subconscious mind comes to know this, then the plan for success is demonstrated in real time. If you have never experienced this, you have lots to look forward to.

DIRECTION – THOUGHTS ARE THINGS THAT YOU MANUFACTURE. THEY ARE DELIVERED BY THE EMOTIONS & ARE ALWAYS IN TRANSIT & AVAILABLE FOR EDITING.

I was stunned to learn that I had this power. Forever I held the belief that I was my emotional states. In fact, my language reinforced this to my subconscious mind. Other people also helped greatly with the reinforcement process. As my self-image & self-esteem were lowered by these beliefs, it was now easy to understand why I was so gullible, absorbing whatever someone told me about myself. But, this was about to end. Never again would I be opened to this type of programming, either from mySelf OR from anyone else.

Working with special tools of Awareness Meditation, it’s not difficult to locate the problematic mind programs & especially if you ask your own subconscious & unconscious mind to make these available to you. Throughout the blog & other areas on my websites,  I’ve given examples of some of my own mind programs, as well as those from my patients & students. Now is the time for you to begin to study your own.

MIND EXERCISE

Find a quiet place & enter stillness. Deepen the stillness, either by body scanning, mental biofeedback or imagery deepening. There are examples of this in other sections of the blog or in the mp3 programs. It just takes a minute or so to become sufficiently relaxed in both mind & body. Next, place your fingertips on your lower abdomen & either observe your breath OR repeat a word mantra. Stay with that focus. Very soon you will sense a thought…..simply notice it & then return to your mantra or belly breath. Continue along like this, noticing the thoughts that flow through.

Imagine that you can take any thought & hold it in the palm of your hand. The thought is a “thing.” It also has many facets, as well as a marinade. As you become more skilled you will be able to change the strength of the marinade, as well as to edit the facets. But for now, just practice noticing & returning to the focus breath or mantra.

LIVING EXPERIENCE

The other day I was flying up to Providence. We were about to begin the decent when the flight attendant came on the loudspeaker. “I’m sorry to deliver BAD news! There is a storm over the airport & the air traffic controllers SEEM TO BE CONFUSED about where we can land safely. We are running out of fuel & so, we must hurry up to Boston BEFORE the fuel runs out.” This is truly what she said & not an exaggeration. Now think about how these words were playing out as mind & body programs in each of the passengers.

Luckily, I’m very well mind-trained & so I used a specific image to protect my own mind & body from the kind of energy that must have been flowing around that cabin. There was no way that I could or would allow any negative thoughts to enter my space.. I have a powerful image that I use in circumstances such as this. First, I relax into the moment…..deepening. Then, I place a golden egg shape around me. In this instance I placed one around her & then around each individual in the plane, sensing everyone deeply relaxed & visiting our separate mind screens. On mine, I future-paced images of being in the airport in Boston, looking around the different shops & finding some unique items. Then, we were over Providence & landing beautifully.

For those of us who work in the field of mind & body, we are keenly aware of the power of emotional energy & the law of attraction. Unfortunately the flight attendant, for whatever reason, put out negative energy that could easily pull the energy of all of the passengers onto a path that obviously no one wanted. This is extremely dangerous & so we come to know not only the power of the words we use but the energy that we apply to them. In addition, if someone is in the position of power, then this can worsen the situation.

We did land safely in Boston & I’d like to say that this was the end of the flight attendant’s poor judgment, but unfortunately, it wasn’t. There was a small mutiny of the passengers, who began to take matters into their own hands. Luckily nothing negative happened, but it was interesting to observe how people refused to be programmed, even though this woman was in a leadership position.

CATEGORIZING THOUGHTS

There are many ways to work with thought processes & categorizing them is just one way. This technique teaches you to set up mind folders that are labeled with your most frequent categories. These can be negative or positive. Building this type of discipline is very helpful in the area of focus, flow & mind flexibility.

Keep in mind that thoughts are things that are in transit & can be edited. Also, remember that the mind is a servo-mechanism, delivering back to you what you think. Therefore, why would anyone want to be playing thought files of failure, anxiety, depression, low self-image & esteem, lack of confidence, etc?

Designing An Inner Mentor

Peaking in on a recent workshop conversation with Katya….

I don’t like to change & change is very difficult for me, so please tell me, “How long do I have to do all of these things & do I have to do all of them at once?” At the most, I could possibly change one thing, but not two & they will have to be in the same area of my life. Like, I can’t change something about my eating & then also change something else at the same time. For example, I might be able to change what I eat for breakfast, but I couldn’t start exercising at the same time. Or, I might be able to start caring for my bitten nails, but I wouldn’t be able to organize my daily activities in that same week. All I can say is that I certainly wouldn’t be able to manage all of the things you talk about & write about, so what are the chances that I’ll be successful? 

DIRECTION – YOUR BODY PERFORMS HUNDREDS OF FUNCTIONS AT THE SAME TIME & SO YOU ALREADY HAVE EXPERIENCE IN DOING SO. YOU ARE MUCH MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE. CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS FIRST & THE ACTION WILL FOLLOW.

It is quite a shock to wake up & to find out how many things need to be changed in order to succeed. It doesn’t matter if it is food-related or in other areas, there is usually never just one thing that needs attention. In the above conversation, it’s obvious that Katya is truly frightened & I can bet that this is not the first time she has had this conversation. Even if she hasn’t had it with others, more than likely it plays regularly in her mind, keeping her blocked, stagnant in her problems, while success flows away out of her reach. I say this because her conversation is quite orchestrated, each excuse following the other in an organized fashion.

Katya has sold herself this entire list of garbage. She thinks in negatives & in excuses & so this is what she attracts. She perceives herself as a very limited individual, a victim of the world-stage & this is what she has become. Her words form images of failure & she knows without being told that success is not within her reach….. not if she thinks & verbalizes like this.

WHAT YOU THINK & SAY IS WHAT YOU GET.

It is very dangerous to walk around having conversations like Katya’s. Even though she may think that she is talking about food-related issues, her subconscious mind is connecting all of her liabilities to every area of her life. She is literally digging a very deep hole that can keep her captive forever unless something or someone comes to her rescue.

Katya is on automatic pilot & truly not aware of what she is doing to herself. She is also under the very wrong assumption that she has unlimited time to make important changes. She has no awareness that her body is changing in every moment & the decisions she is making or not making are causing change. Killer diseases, such as heart & circulatory disease, are examples of diseases that are built by bad decisions made over a period of time.

Katya lives a stressful life & accumulated stress is a known killer. So, for Katya, there is no time to waste.

DIRECTION – YOU ARE WHO YOU THINK YOU ARE.

We all have a Higher Self. This is not the same as a Higher Power, but the two can be thought of as working together. Some people are not comfortable with Higher Power discussions & that is fine. However, we do need to accept that we have a Higher Self. This is our Self that is free of emotions, one that is mature & capable of high-level discipline & achievement. I often call this “our Therapeutic Self.”

Katya maintains that she is completely “incapable” of making the changes needed to take care of herself. This is an infantile position & one that will take her down very dangerous roads. For Katya & those like her, it’s necessary to build or create a Higher Self & then to allow that creation to take control of her life actions. This is done both consciously & subconsciously. Katya will become the new mentor image in her own mind.

I ask her to make a list of the characteristics of someone who is capable of running a healthy & creative life. I do not ask her to make a list of what she wants for herself. To do so would invite blocking. Her insecure & victim Self would not be willing to open to such a suggestion.

Katya has little trouble describing others who she admires & with some guidance, she makes a list of some characteristics.

1. Confident
2. Compassionate & forgiving
3. Consistent & persistent
4. Focused & disciplined
5. Cheerful inside & out
6. Forthright, trusting & loyal
7. Assertive
8. Honest to self & others
9. Peaceful
10. Creative

I ask Katya to relax deeply & I help her to deepen further. I want her to be below the alpha state, just like the level of relaxing before going to sleep at night. Anxious & tense individuals can relax quite deeply when assisted with self-hypnosis suggestions. The mind & body do want to go to balance or homeostasis.

I bring Katya’s attention to her mind screen & ask her to image her new inner guide or mentor. Then I ask her to describe her to me & to tell me her name. Katya’s response is very quick….a good indication that she is deeply relaxed & involved in the imagery. “Her name is Johna.” This is a rather unusual name because it is both male & female. I then ask Katya to deliver the characteristics that she designed to “Johna.” They are to be delivered one at a time & Johna will absorb them, just like a marinade.

Katya is now ready to enter the mind screen to meet Johna & to establish a relationship with her.

I suggest to Katya that she notice the characteristics once again, also noticing that Johna has many others…… perhaps like other woman or even men that she knows. She has a strength of character, determination, perseverance, confidence, discipline, a sense of humor, creativity, focus….. of so many things. Kaya watches Johna as she walks around Katya’s life, taking care of things. Speaking out to others, relaxing as she does…. feeling great & sensing her inner power. Now, Johna invites Katya to step inside of her. And now, Katya walks around her own life inside of Johna….guiding her, making suggestions that are easily birthed from the characteristics. I ask Katya to feel or sense what it feels like to be inside of her.

I’ll place a trigger for this, such as two fingers touching. This will enable Katya to re-enter this mind-state of Johna whenever she consciously feels a need. However, the subconscious mind will be making changes without conscious input.

Inner Schooling

We all have dark sides, but how we manage them makes all the difference in how we get to perceive & then live our lives. Our experiences equal the amount of light we choose to shine our way, as well as what we choose to share with the world at large. Keep in mind that we are walking billboards, advertising our behaviors & emotional marinade.

DIRECTION – IT’S TIME FOR INNER SCHOOLING

Staying focused on emotional states & what’s underneath them is easier said than done…..unless you have been schooled in the practice of Heightened Awareness. This includes emotional & thought management, as well as the physical sensations or body communications. Just about everything is tied up in this nutshell. Here’s the catch….learn these skills or your emotions & thoughts will not only rule you but your body as well & this can be a huge gamble.

As strange as it sounds, we only have a vague idea of what we look like on the outside. Many of us can’t bear looking at self-photographs & work hard to keep cameras away. Even if we like the way we look, what we get to see is only a momentary image caught by the lens, now seen through our own perception & inner judging program. For certain, we do remain a mystery, both outside & inside.

A very large percentage of what resides inside of us, physical or emotional, tends to remain mysterious for most of our lives, mainly because we’re not attentive to the clues sent up by the body departments. Sometimes we awaken if the body part screams loud enough, but even then, little is done about the underlying cause. We may turn to medication to obliterate the symptom, or to another substance to mask the truths. If the family & personal history pulls towards addiction, these symptoms then become the hooks & an unhealthy pattern of behavior is actually etched into the subconscious mind.

KNOWLEDGE HOOK – WORKING WITH MOMENTS

The practice of Interactive Awareness helps us to work where the action is, right in the middle of the moment. When working with the skill of isolating moments it is important to have a working image tool, representative of an actual moment. In my practice, students & readers/listeners of my books & CD’s work with dry lentils, keeping a jar of them on their desk. Some have two jars. One symbolizes moments that are left in life & the other representing those that were missed due to inattentiveness.

Of course, we cannot catch all the moments, but we certainly want to catch key moments.

I came to notice that when I am involved in my disorderly eating patterns, my body fills with tension. I’m a runner & on those days my injuries feel even worse. Perhaps the most frightening thing to me is the feeling of underlying anxiety that doesn’t seem to be connected to anything that is going on in my life. This is called GAD, or generalized anxiety disorder. My concentration & focus are off & my emotions are in roller-coaster mode.

INTO THE BODY

We begin our quest for Heightened Awareness in the body & begin to work with a tool called mental biofeedback or body scanning. This mind-tool holds a big advantage because, in any moment in time, the person practicing mental biofeedback can release & change a body sensation, an emotion or a thought. There are also other advantages. As one learns to observe the momentary body sensations over a period of time, the body sensation patterns become clear. One can observe how they are attached to particular emotional states, or perhaps to triggers such as situations or relationships.

Another advantage is the feeling of self-confidence in being able to change an unpleasant or frightening sensation, right at the moment, whether it be peaking or just beginning to build. This includes behavioral or emotional patterns as well.

CONTAINMENTS & RELEASE

Containments are invaluable because they allow us to work in big areas of our lives without feeling overwhelmed. Body sensations can be overwhelming, especially if they are not contained or released. In addition, if a sensation is not released, the mindbody connection will produce even more. This is because the mindbody senses this as a “goal.” The only way for us to tell the mindbody that we don’t want something is to practice the skill of “release.”

MIND EXERCISE

Take a moment to relax deeply. Locate your mind screen on the back of your eyelids. Now draw or think a circle around your head. Notice that the cells move apart from each other. When we are tense, the cells tighten up, literally hugging each other. The circle is the image that instructs them to part, floating away from each other. Make some inner circles around your eyes, TMJ joints & chin, once more noticing the cells floating apart.

Now place a circle around the front of your neck & then the back. Pay attention to the cells floating. Travel down & encircle your right shoulder…..cells floating…..left shoulder….cells floating. You get the idea. Place a large bag around your right & left arms, inviting the cells to float. Circle around your chest & next the lower abdomen, following the same process. As you do this, you might notice some body parts calling out. They do this by reporting a sensation. Simply notice & place a circled around it. That’s all. Now, place a large bag around your left leg & then the right. You know the drill.

When you have finished, mind-draw a golden egg shape around all of you, so you are actually contained inside of it. This is your private place on the face of the earth & from this position you can now program your mind screen for observing thoughts & emotions.

It’s very important to release your body frequently. Once you skill-build, it can actually be accomplished in 1/200th of a second, just by having a flash image of your process. Then, you are ready for high level, mind screen performance.

Each moment carries a series of body sensations, emotions & thoughts. As you work to catch these in the practice of deep relaxation, noticing & release, you will then be able to edit or change them, right then & there. As you catch & open, the subconscious mind is also ready for new programming.

The Disbelieving Self

“We all have a part of us that doesn’t believe that we can do something. The job of that “disbelieving” part is to question positive images or ideas we might have & then to design “creative negative-proof” that we are incapable & so we remain stuck. QUESTIONING…

A comment from a reader, “Oh yes, I love the image of the director chair that you have & I want one, BUT I need proof that I can have one.”

The “inner child” is alive & no, not well, but instead dis-functioning….raining on the parade. This is like window shopping & then when you want to go into the store to purchase something that you would truly love to have, you find yourself blocked at the gate.

LEARNING & ACCEPTING…

It’s easy to know that this is the child-Self manipulating & making trouble at the door. The leader-Self would never utter these words. The leader-Self is mature, focused, quiet, powerful & very assertive. The leader-Self knows what he/she wants & plants the image of that in the “theater of the mind” as if it were already present because it is.

This is a KEY CONCEPT, following how the mind works. There must be a leader & it cannot be the child-Self. To allow this is to invite all sorts of problems & interference. Life & choices do not have to be complicated. Return to simplicity…..”do you want this CHAIR? Well then….CLAIM IT AS YOURS.”

Many of us have spent lots of time window shopping & have stayed outside the store. Some of us have even stopped going to the window. We tell ourselves, “It’s of no use. I’ll never be able to solve my issues & to have the things  I want.” This is the “disbelieving Self” in action. Sometimes the messages are even more depressing, flowing into other areas of life including work & relationships. So you can understand why it is so important to move to the leadership position of the Self & to take charge.

SIMPLY PRETEND THAT YOU ARE LOADED WITH CONFIDENCE.

Take some quiet time for yourSelf & relax into the moment. The deeper you choose to relax, the better for you. Not only will your knees stop shaking, but you will begin to feel your own confidence pooling inside of you. Perhaps you are wondering if you have confidence & of course, you do. You started building confidence as a young baby & your collection of confidence moments have built over the years you have been alive. You not only built confidence from things that were easy for you, but you also found it in very difficult moments. This is “resilience confidence” & is very powerful. Travel on your time-line & find samples to bring back.

As a baby, you learned to turn over, to hold up your head, to sit, to stand, to put things in your mouth & a whole host of other things. As a toddler, you found confidence in new things every single day. Going forward, look to your pre-school era & up through your elementary school. No, everything wasn’t easy & that’s the point. You survived. You learned. You traveled forward. Junior high, high school, early adulthood & right up to where you are now in this very moment. Take your time & fill your basket with samples from these years. Now, notice how your basket fills up. These are your accomplishments, both big & small; some harder & more resilient than others.

Now, relax deeply as you hold your confidence. Look to the mindscreen & find the store window. Notice you are window-shopping & now you are entering the store. Standing tall & assertive….relaxed & quiet in your assertiveness. Listening….I AM. This is your self-esteem talking to you. You are a person of value. This is your Self-Efficacy….ownership of yourSelf. You are the leaderSelf & you make the choices & then the decisions. Sense this as you wander about the store. Truly sense or feel it inside of yourSelf. Notice the childSelf is observing & admiring you; pleased to be a child & without the responsibilities of being the leaderSelf. Now, you have this straight.

In the corner of the store is your Director Chair. Make the purchase….& take the chair out with you. Listen…..non-sense to proof. You wanted it & now you have it. You are in charge. Truly sense it in your body……& now in your mind.

HOW INTERACTIVE SELF-HYPNOSIS WORKS

Hypnosis is a natural activity of the mind & body. It can be very healthy if one is entertaining positive, healthy images while inviting the body to relax deeply. The brain waves are slowed, the stress chemicals are diminished & the subconscious mind is ready to accept suggestions.

In the practice of my original Interactive Self-Hypnosis, the individual, even the reader, relaxes very deeply & then the suggestions are either verbalized or written. The subconscious mind accepts the suggestions, especially if they are coated in a marinade of highly positive emotion. The emotion can be delivered through spoken or written words. I like to take the individual into the action “right in the moment” & to teach them how to change mindsets to suit the purpose of their chosen journey.

In the small practice above, the reader is disarming the disbelieving child-Self & taking back the power of leader-Self. While this sounds like a simple little story, it is evoking big changes in the memory bank, re-framing areas for enhanced self-image, self-esteem, self-efficacy & self-confidence. The individual is now looking through different lenses & seeing/sensing what is possible. In addtion, action is made without any fuss or efforting. This is the way it is supposed to be.

We live in the world surrounded by nay-sayers & other kinds of negative energy, much of it under our same roof or hat. We have the power to change this in the wink of an eye. Remember, the subconscious mind will accept whatever is delivered in the state of slow brain waves, as long as it is presented with emotional marindade. Make certain that yours is always of the positive variety. If not, you may get to taste something that you don’t want !
